Vegan Mexican Food … My Date with the Chefs at Milagro Cantina

Mexican fare is by far my favorite style of cooking. Avocado, beans, salsa and cilantro, what’s there not to love!!! It is a magical mix of flavours that dance on your taste-buds and go well with tequila!

TEQUIIIIIIIILLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAA

The problem with Mexican cuisine is that we live in a world with Americanized everything. Italian, Chinese, Mexican, these dishes have wandered so far from the actual root of the culture that the traditions and flavours are often lost. SO I turned to a Toronto based resto that I could trust to provide me with authentic mexican cuisine… Watch this video to see the amazing dishes that were prepared for me!

Ceviche made with jicama instead of fish, Tacos with a mushroom base and tonnes of Avocado was used in many dishes instead of fresh cream… food heaven never tasted so good.

Thanks Milagro Cantina Mexicana!!!

Want to see where else I’m eating? Follow me on twitter… I post my favorite dishes from all sorts of non vegan restaurants.

IM DOINNNN NUTTIN’ TODAYYY MUTHAAAFFFFFFF

Days off for someone like myself are few and far between. I treat each day off as if it were the last day alive. I wake up early, and do some yoga. This prepares me for the day ahead, it clears my mind of lingering worries and stagnant stresses. It also allows me to enjoy the next 12 hours of worry free adventure. And beer, I drink beer as I meditate… don’t hate.

After an hour of downward dogs and attempted handstands followed by properly executed arm balances I found myself hungry … Now many my regular readers will go ahead and assume that I blended up one of my many random, but delicious smoothies. FALSE!!! on Saturdays I eat cake! ( also yummy in a smoothie btw) yesterday I baked a gluten free vegan chocolate cake for a friend. I had leftover dough….

After my well deserved cake fiesta I visited my stylist at Blonde Salon. I am horrible at maintaining an Elegant coiff so obviously I was reprimanded on arrival. But I made up for it in inappropriate jokes and X rated story time. Personally I believe I should get a “Most inappropriate client” award or something… Just sayin’ …

They were nice enough to let me eat my Belmonte Raw salad on the rooftop

Now I realize this may not be for everyone, but I personally believe that antiquing is not just a sport for the elderly. I have been on a hunt for a 1920s style crystal bar set for quite some time. And so, on my walk from the east side to the west side I just had to stop in every vintage shop I could. No success today… I did find this though… A old school peeping tom pervert machine! AND ITS ALL MINE!!!!!

I have a reputation for cultivating random friendships from all of my experiences, both exciting and not so exciting. One of these encounters was at the Bang On tshirt store on queen. I wandered in to say hello and found @brandon_jftd and his multiple packed lunches. A man after my own heart. I, myself keep a plethora of snacks and meals in my purse at all times. Sweet appetite bro.

and sweet cat shirt.. I want that, give it me right MEOW!!!!!!

No day off would be complete without my daily two hours of blog writing. Today I spent that time on the Tequila Bookworm patio with a pint of Denisons and lush green surroundings. I had the whole place to myself. I was THIS close to taking my pants off… But stopped myself just as the kind server man came to check on me… Next time waiter man, next time.

After 3 hours on the patio alone and blogging all I gots on the brain is TACO TACO TACO TACO TACO TACO TACO… so I’m going to fill that craving now … HAPPY DAY OFF FRIENDS!

HOT SPOT: Magic Oven

Just because you are vegan or gluten free does not mean you have miss out on one of the worlds tastiest foods — Pizza! I will wholeheartedly admit that I LOVE pizza, it is probably my favorite food. I could eat pizza everyday and be okay with it. So one of the first things I sought out when I switched to a vegan lifestyle was an alternative to pizza. This was a make or break thing here people. Is a life without pizza worth living?!

Well now you don’t need to think about it, I have found the alternative. It lives in the Toronto Based Pizzaria with a love for the environment, local ingredients and is appropriatly titled MAGIC OVEN. And magical it is. They offer a  diverse selection of healthy pizzas, pastas and sandwiches made to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and concerns. Everything from organic spelt pizzas, gluten-free rice flour pizzas and the option of vegan or lactose-free cheese. You can go with your traditional favorite or try something wild and crazy like the Phytonutrient Pizza! If that wasn’t incentive enough, they also offer organic specialty wines and beer! We all know beer and pizza has been a match made in heaven even before Harold and Maude. Take a look at the Menu.

Here’s another fun fact, They are so enviromentally friendly that not only is their packaging Eco-friendly but their restaurant locations are all reclaimed sites, saved from demolition crews and featuring recycled furniture and fixtures. Cool right?  So go, go now to one of their 4 locations! … and don’t forget to invite me!

HOT SPOT : Tori’s Bakeshop

Last week my boss surprised us with a treat from Tori’s Bake Shop,  and what a treat it was! These delightful vegan sweets were gluten free and totally organic! The cupcakes melted in your mouth, and the cookies were soft and moist, and perrrrfect.

Tori’s Bakeshop is an eco-friendly, all-natural organic bakery that offers dairy-free, egg-free, casein-free and refined sugar-free treats of all sorts. It is appropriately located on the east end in the Beaches, and offers a selection of healthy baked goods—scones, muffins, biscuits, banana bread, cupcakes, doughnuts and homemade chocolate bars. As well as espresso-based beverages made from freshly roasted beans provided by the Merchants of Green Coffee.

YOU SHOULD GO, GO NOW, GET YOUR SUGAR HIGH ON!!

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

I think this is such a fun idea! I may have to host one.

The popular dessert-based advocacy event will return in April.

By Elizabeth Castoria | March 24, 2012

For activists who prefer to use sweets as their tactic of choice, the hugely popular Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale will return for its fourth year from April 21 to 29. Each year, participants from around the globe hold bake sales during the prescribed time period and donate the funds they raise to charities of their choice. Up to 150 individual bake sales usually take place during the week, and a grand total of $100,000 has been raised during the first three years of the event. The bake sale has garnered major media attention in years past from CNN, which applauded the simplicity and effectiveness of the program.

Join Me on The Bridge.

Yesterday was International Women’s Day. I am so proud of the women in my life for making this event such a success. I am so lucky to have such inspiring and strong women in my life. Women that will stop at nothing to make a difference, and work just as hard to make their dreams come true. It is a beautiful and strong support system.

The Join me on the Bridge campaign started in 2010 when women from Congo and Rwanda joined together on the bridge connecting their two countries, showing that they could build the bridges of peace and hope for the future. This action sparked a massive global movement, and last year they were joined by thousands of people on hundreds of bridges worldwide.

On International Women’s Day, 8 March, thousands of people showed that they are with the women of Afghanistan, Iraq, Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan and other war-torn countries.

We stood with these women to give them strength and to show we support their demands for peace and equality. Women are peace builders and with equality at the peace negotiation tables and governing bodies of their countries they will build a more peaceful world. Stronger women are building the bridges of peace for our future. With your support we will be even stronger.

International Womens Day is a day to inspire women and celebrate achievements.Because, lets face it, without us… the world just wouldn’t be the same. IWD is a global web of rich and diverse local activity that connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.

So go, and tell that awesome woman in your life just how much she means to you. She deserves it.

Expansion Series Part 2: Yoga at The National Ballet

In the past year and half I have come to know incredible women doing wondrous things. Each woman is whole heartedly pursuing a dream and doing it with their heart and soul. This event was a dream of many. I feel so lucky to have been able to be a part of this beautiful event that is so dear to many. After many hours of prep, planning and brainstorming over too many bottles of wine to mention, this event became a reality.

Amber Joliat owner of MISFITSTUDIO in the heart of Queen West held a class at The National Ballet based around the word love. Just in time for Valentines Day, this word was a fresh focus for many. Single or attached, love is universal. This word, with so many meanings was brought into a space where it flowed through each heartbeat simultaneously. Amber described the scene as “an ocean of yogi’s flowing like a wave as one… it was beautiful.”

Here is some yogi photography
